Understanding How Multifocal Contacts Work

Recent innovations have allowed for contact lenses that can provide clear vision for people with presbyopia without needing the use of eyeglasses. Whether or not you need distance correction in your reading prescription, if you’re still using eyeglasses, you might find multifocal lenses much more convenient for your daily usage.

What Are Multifocal Lenses?

These types of contacts are designed for people who have presbyopia, which is an eye condition that’s caused by the loss of elasticity and eventual hardening of the eyes’ lenses. This usually happens to people around 35 to 40 years and older, in which they find it difficult to focus on things up close and that their near vision has become blurry.

Multifocal lenses come in different varieties as some can correct nearsighted and farsighted vision at the same time. This means multiple different prescriptions can be accommodated by a single pair of these contact lenses, so whether you are reading or driving, you can focus clearly on objects at varying distances.

Are Multifocal Lenses Right for You?

If you’re considering switching to bifocal or multifocal lenses, you’ll need to have your eyes checked first to see if you’re a good candidate. Even if you already have a prescription for using bifocals, keep in mind that not all multifocal lenses are bifocals. Switching to a different pair of contacts won’t be that simple, so make sure to set an appointment with your trusted optometrist.

If you tend to use regular distance contact lenses and simply put on reading glasses when needed, then bifocal and multifocal contact lenses can be a more convenient option for you. But even if you’re considered a good candidate for multifocal lenses, there’s still an adjustment period where it may take some time before your eyes can differentiate between prescriptions. Once your eyes are fully adjusted and the contacts fit perfectly, you won’t need to rely on your reading glasses for most of your routine tasks.
