Can Blue Light Glasses Protect Your Kids’ Vision?

For parents, one of the challenges that come with online learning is preventing digital eye strain, which is caused by too much screen time or gadget use. Fortunately, there are several ways to reduce digital strain: your kids’ computer screen’s display settings can be adjusted for easier viewing, and you can also teach them the 20-20-20 rule (they should take a break every 20 minutes and look at an object at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds).

There’s also the option of having your kids wear computer glasses. But do they really work? And, if so, are they just as effective as the said methods? The short answer is yes; blue light glasses can provide some form of protection for your kid’s still-developing eyes.

Is Exposure to Blue Light a Bad Thing?

In the modern age, there’s no escaping blue light, which is emitted by device screens. But, is exposure to blue light a bad thing? Currently, there’s no evidence that suggests blue light can damage your child’s vision. However, there is one major caveat: medical professionals are still not sure about the long-term effects of exposure to blue light. That’s mostly because it’s only recently that humans have been exposed to this much blue light. Just two decades ago, mobile blue light-emitting devices – which have since become a defining feature of modern life – were limited to only a select few.

How Blue Light Glasses Can Protect Your Kids’ Still-Developing Vision

Limiting your kids’ screen time is still the best way to reduce digital eye strain. But this strategy isn’t that feasible when schools have shifted to a hybrid learning system, which is why parents are looking for alternative ways to reduce digital eye strain as well as vision therapy options to help keep their children’s vision development on track. One of the alternatives would be to give your child blue light glasses, which can lower your child’s exposure to blue-violet rays by 80% or more.

To learn more about how you can manage your child’s screen time, you can consult your local eye doctor.
