Is It a Good Idea to Get Photochromic Lenses?

Those who wear eyeglasses know how walking outside when it’s bright and sunny can be a challenge. Many bring both their glasses and sunglasses when heading out and switch between the two as needed. However, with photochromic lenses, you don’t need to worry about this issue since they darken under the sun and go clear again when you’re in the shade.

What Are Photochromic Lenses

Photochromic lenses grow darker through various processes, which vary by the type of lenses and brands. In the past, these lenses depended on silver chloride to react to ultraviolet (UV) light and darken. However, today, most photochromic lenses utilize proprietary dyes that go through chemical changes that darken the lenses under UV light exposure.

What Are the Pros of These Lenses?

Many eye doctors recommend photochromic lenses because they offer constant protection against the harmful UV light. You don’t have to always bring two kinds of eyewear with you if you have these lenses. They are also great for children because they are unlikely to lose glasses if they only have one pair.

Photochromic lenses come in a wide range of styles and colors, meaning there’s an option ideal for your vision needs. Whether you’re looking for bifocals, progressives or shatter-resistant lenses, there’s a lens for you. Moreover, these lenses are also a cost-effective option since you don’t need to buy both prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses.
