Frame considerations for Children

The frame of your child’s glasses is very important. If it does not fit right or your child is embarrassed to wear the glasses, it will be an uphill battle to get them to wear their needed correction.

Often times your child’s bridge of their nose is not as prominent as it will be when they are older. Getting frames with built up nose pads to prevent the frame from slipping down their face is helpful. If the glasses still slip you can get frames with cable around the temples so that they hook around the ears of your child. Most manufacturers know that they need to shrink the bridge size in order to fit properly.

The frame material is an important consideration. While plastic frames are fine for the majority of children, a child that is more rough with their glasses may benefit from wearing a frame that can flex without warping. Some children are allergic to substances that can be found in frame alloys such as nickel. For infants and toddlers, getting a frame like a Miraflex one is designed to wrap around smaller heads and be made of a more malleable and rubbery material that won’t break easily.

Having spring hinges that can flex in multiple directions without breaking is something you should look out far as well before selecting the right frame. If your child falls asleep with their glasses on it is helpful to have spring hinges to prevent costly breakage.

For sports, consider looking into sports goggles. A normal pair of glasses can be sent flying when that errant elbow hits during a basketball game. Not only will a pair of goggles hold up to the impact but it can also help prevent injuries to the eyes which are common in sports amongst children.

Finding the right pair of glasses for your child can be a tricky thing. If you happen to be in our area, we’d love to help your child get a new pair of glasses. Come visit our Costa Mesa office anytime!
