A comprehensive medical eye exam is conducted to detect refractive errors, eye diseases and vision impairments. It can take more than an hour to complete depending on the tests you have to take.

Medical Eye Exam
Before getting your eyes checked, an ophthalmic assistant or technician will confirm if you have any medical or family history of eye diseases. If you do, your doctor may suggest additional tests. They will then check your eyes’ pressure, muscle function and dryness. Refractometry will be conducted to determine your glasses prescription. After this, you will be given a chance to pick a frame for your glasses. This process is done before dilation because your vision will be blurry after this process.
An optician will place dilating drops in your eyes. Once they take effect, you will be called by the doctor for the final exam. Using a slit lamp, they will examine the surface of your eye, lens and the retina. This test helps detect cataracts and retinal problems. A glaucoma puff test may be performed for patients who are at risk for the disease.
The technician’s findings, along with the results of your last test, will define your eyes’ health. It will be determined whether you have developed an eye condition or are in need of vision therapy.
How Often Should You Get a Medical Eye Exam?
You should get a comprehensive medical eye exam every two years. Children, individuals over 60 and those with existing conditions should have the exams yearly. A medical eye exam is essential in monitoring your eye health and maintaining your vision. Pupil dilation can help in early detection and treatment of many eye diseases. Keep in mind that some eye diseases have no warning signs, and symptoms only manifest when the condition has already progressed.
