What Are Floaters and Flashes?

Floaters appear in your field of vision due to the tiny clumps of gels or cells inside the vitreous that fills your eye. When these clumps cast shadows on your retina or when the vitreous pulls away from the back of the eye (a condition called posterior vitreous detachment), you see floaters in the form of dots, specks, lines or threads.

This typically happens to those who are nearsighted, those who have had inflammation inside the eye and those who have undergone surgery for cataracts.

Flashes, on the other hand, are described as flashing lights or lightning streaks. They’re common among older people, and they occur when the vitreous pulls or rubs on the retina.

When Do They Become a Cause for Concern?

Posterior vitreous detachment isn’t usually a cause for concern. However, there are times when floaters and flashes may indicate a more serious problem. If you notice any of these signs, make an appointment with your eye doctor immediately.

• Onset of new floaters and flashes
• A shadow in your peripheral vision
• A gradual shading of vision from one side like a gray curtain being drawn or covering part of your vision
• A rapid decline in central vision
