When to Schedule Pediatric Eye Exams

The eyes are one of the most sensitive organs in the human body, and getting an eye exam at an early age can help identify or prevent eye and vision problems in children.

Today, we discuss the ideal schedule for pediatric eye exams.

Why Do Children Need Eye Exams?

Children are still developing their eyes, and an eye exam can help screen them for eye conditions. Determining the health of children’s eyes also helps parents and doctors create a course of action if they are at risk of developing eye or vision problems. Some of the most common eye problems that can be detected at a young age are amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (misaligned eyes). Fortunately, with proper treatment, you can protect your children’s vision. That’s why it’s good to schedule pediatric eye exams.

It must also be considered that there are genetic eye conditions you might need to watch out for. If your family has a history of poor eyesight or eye problems, getting a pediatric eye exam is a must. It can also help your eye doctors if you have documentation of your child’s eye health to give them a better idea of what to look for and expect.

What Is the Ideal Schedule for Eye Exams?

Pediatric eye exams are done regularly as children grow up. For your child’s first eye exam, it’s recommended that they have it before their first birthday – between six to nine months old. Additionally, children who were born premature, have existing health problems or belong to a family that has a history of eye problems need to be checked early. This is because their eye health can affect the development of their body and mind too.
