Common Causes of Workplace Eye Injuries and Disease

Many potential hazards could result in serious eye injuries or diseases in your workplace. In this post, reputable eye doctors from Insight Vision Center Optometry will explore some of the most common causes of workplace eye injuries and disease and the best steps that you can take to protect your vision.

Flying Objects

Flying objects commonly cause workplace eye injuries, especially in manufacturing, construction and other industries where heavy machinery is used. When flying objects come into contact with the eye, they can cause anything from minor scratches and irritations to severe trauma or blindness. To protect your eyes from flying objects, always wear appropriate eye protection.

Chemical Exposure

Many workplaces use chemicals such as acids, solvents and cleaning agents that can cause severe eye damage. Chemical burns are painful and can result in permanent vision damage or blindness. Always wear appropriate eye protection when handling or working with chemicals to protect your eyes from chemical exposure. If you were accidentally exposed and are experiencing severe symptoms, call your reliable ortho-k and eye care clinic immediately.

Radiation Exposure

Radiation exposure is an uncommon but severe cause of workplace eye injuries and diseases. Some examples of radiation sources are welding arcs, lasers or ultraviolet light. Prolonged exposure can lead to cataracts, macular degeneration and other serious eye conditions. Always wear appropriate eye protection when working with radiation sources to keep your eyes safe. You can also limit your radiation exposure as much as possible by following safety guidelines and protocols in your workplace.

Poor Lighting

Poor lighting is a more subtle cause of workplace eye strain and fatigue. Employees in workplaces with inadequate lighting may experience eye strain, headaches and other symptoms that can affect their productivity and well-being. Protect your eyes by ensuring your workplace is bright enough but won’t cause glare and eye strain. Use task or adjustable lighting to provide the best possible illumination for your work. Furthermore, take regular breaks to rest your eyes and prevent stress and fatigue.
